There’s a lot of advice about how to apply numbing cream floating around online. Most of it is either oversimplified or overcomplicated. After years of seeing what works — and what doesn’t — here’s a straightforward guide to getting the best results from TKTX.
The One Step Most People Skip
If there’s one thing that determines whether TKTX works well or barely works at all, it’s the plastic wrap step. Applying cream without wrapping it is like making coffee without hot water — the main ingredient is there, but it never activates properly.
Covering the applied cream with plastic wrap (clingfilm) keeps it from drying out and creates warmth that helps the active ingredients penetrate deep into the skin. Without this step, most of the cream sits on the surface and evaporates before it can work.
Step by Step — How to Apply TKTX Correctly
Step 1 — Clean the Area
Wash the area you’re working on with mild soap and warm water. Pat dry with a clean towel. Do not use alcohol-based cleansers — alcohol dries the skin and reduces absorption.
Step 2 — Warm the Skin (Optional but Recommended)
Run a hand towel under hot (not scalding) water, wring it out, and apply it to the area for about 5 minutes. This opens pores and improves blood flow, which helps the cream absorb better. Pat dry before applying.
Step 3 — First Thin Layer
Apply a thin initial layer over the entire planned procedure zone. Rub it in gently to ensure even coverage. This layer primes the skin.
Step 4 — Thick Second Layer (2-3mm)
This is the key step. Once the first layer has absorbed, apply a thick second layer approximately 2-3mm thick. Do not rub this layer in — just apply it evenly over the surface. The thick layer is the actual numbing agent.
Step 5 — Cover with Plastic Wrap
Cover the area tightly with clingfilm. Seal all edges. The warmth created under the wrap dramatically improves how well the cream is absorbed.
Step 6 — Wait
Set a timer and wait the full recommended time before starting:
- TKTX 40%: 30-40 minutes
- TKTX 55%: 20-30 minutes
- TKTX 75%: 20-30 minutes
Step 7 — Remove and Start
Remove the plastic wrap. Wipe the cream off completely with a damp cloth or sterile gauze. Have your artist or practitioner sanitize the area before beginning.
How to Reapply During a Long Session
If your session lasts longer than the numbing duration, you can reapply:
- Clean the next section to be worked on
- Apply a fresh 2-3mm layer
- Cover with plastic wrap and wait 25-35 minutes (TKTX 75%)
- Remove and continue
Do not apply more than 3 times on the same area within 24 hours.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping plastic wrap — this is the #1 reason numbing doesn’t work well
- Not waiting long enough — always wait the full recommended time
- Too thin a layer — the second layer must be visibly thick (2-3mm)
- Using alcohol beforehand — dry skin absorbs less
- Leaving cream on during tattooing — apply before, remove before the needle starts
